The Kineret

The Galilee Lake is located in the north - eastern part of the state of Israel, a place that has the highest rainfall in the country. The sea of Galilee is located in the basin that includes all the areas that drain water from the Hermon Mountains, the eastern Galilee and the Golan Heights. This water basin sector contribution is about 25% of the annual water consumption in Israel. The height of the lake is in the range of 208.8-to 214.87-meters below sea level, and it is the lowest sweet-water lake in the world. The Galilee Lake is in the great rift valley (the Syrian-African Rift), a fact that contributes to the large topographic gaps between surrounding area. The shape of the lake is a rhombus curved by the process of weathering for many years. The area of the lake is 168 square kilometres the length from north - south about 20 km, the average depth of about 25 m (maximum depth about 45 m) and volume approximately -4150 mcm (million cubic meters).

Water quality is maintained by ongoing monitoring, and there is strict monitoring of water levels. The lake drains naturally into the southern part of the Jordan River that flows into the Dead Sea. In 1932 a dam was built (Degania Dam) on the outlet of the natural lake, and the water level of the lake varies based on factors operating between the maximum level prescribed to prevent flooding the communities around the lake (208.8-m) and the minimum level prescribed for maintaining water quality ( 212 - m). The national carrier takes role as the natural drainage of the lake, and the water from there are directed to the west and south of israel. National carrier regulates the water supply by storing them in large pools. The pumping station that brings the water to the national carrier is located in the northern Galilee.
